The beautiful St Lucia is rich in history and culture while maintaining its Caribbean charm. From its amazing crystal clear sailing waters and dramatic waterfalls to its lush tropical rainforests and soft sandy beaches St Lucia is a fabulous yacht charter destination guaranteed to please.

Saint Lucia is a volcanic and mountainous island with some broad, fertile valleys. It is located in the Caribbean, between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, north of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and south of Martinique and Dominica.

St Lucia is famous for the twin peaks of the spectacular Pitons (Gross Piton and Petit Piton), these striking cone-shaped peaks south of Soufriere, are one of the scenic natural highlights of the Caribbean, soon to be among the UNESCO’s classified sites.

Rainforest walks, amazing waterfalls, golden sandy beaches and bubbling volcanic springs. The island even has a volcano you can drive into!

Today there is access to two inner lagoons, one of which includes the Rodney Bay Marina that plays host each year to the ARC transatlantic yachts which arrive in December after crossing from the Canary Islands. This famous and well protected lagoon has many facilities and places to stock up on provisioning, fuel and water.

There are many restaurants in the area serving a large variety of local Creole dishes and spectacular seafood including the fresh local crabs, lobsters and conch.

Marigot Bay is one of the most beautiful bays in the whole of the Caribbean, and is definitely worth an overnight visit, with its convenient location for your onward sailing adventure in this beautiful undiscovered paradise.

Weather Conditions

General weather for St Lucia

The weather here is a tropical climate moderated by northeast trade winds. The dry season is from December to June and the wet season is from June to November. The average daytime temperatures are around 290C. The average night time temperatures are around 180C. Water temperature is fairly constant at 83°F or 28°C.

The topography of St Lucia is mountainous, - more mountainous than most of the other Caribbean islands. There are beautiful beaches and some black volcanic sand. The area is affected by hurricanes during the storm season from June to November.

The Windwards are blessed with almost perfect weather for 12 months a year. Sea state in the passages between the islands can be moderate but are rarely rough.

Visitors should bring cool, comfortable clothing.

Current, between the islands, generally sets towards the west at approximately 0.5 to 2 knots and the swell is mainly northeast to east, but can occasionally be north during the winter months.

The north-south orientation of the islands means the wind will be on the beam more often than not when sailing south. This is ideal for fast sailing on the longer passages between some of the islands. Heading north, sailing close-hauled or on a close reach is typical. Some sailors opt for a one-way charter, allowing them to cover more ground and avoid sailing to windward.

Wind strengths range from 10 knots to a more spirited 25 knots, often strengthening off the northern ends of the islands due to the effect of the land. Navigation is straightforward, though plotting courses and keeping an eye on the GPS is important. The tall, cloud-topped peaks of the islands can be seen for miles.
