Malaysia - Langkawi - Tioman Islands

Malaysia has a great deal to offer the visitor and sailor, including a colourful culture, delicious food and welcoming friendly people. The sailing conditions are excellent and the scenery exquisite, with spectacular coastline and beaches, tropical islands, and warm emerald waters.

Langkawi

Langkawi, officially known as the Jewel of Kedah is an archipelago of 99 islands in the Andaman Sea, located 20 miles from the mainland coast of north-western Malaysia. The islands are a part of the state of Kedah, which is adjacent to the Thai border.

The cruising ground is the Andaman Sea, including the archipelago which makes up the Langkawi group and also the southern Thai islands of the Butang group and Tarutao, which has long been one of the most popular holiday destinations in this region.

Sheltered by the mountainous backbone of Peninsular Malaysia, Langkawi escapes the north-eastern Winter monsoon entirely and enjoys sunny skies in Winter when the eastern provinces are flooded.

Only four of the main islands are inhabited meaning the best way to explore and discover these magical islands are aboard your own yacht. Langkawi offers a relaxed pace in a beautiful and tropical setting - it is simply a paradise to be discovered.

Tioman Islands

The Tioman Islands is a paradise Island location. Untouched beauty spots, incredible snorkelling/diving and a most amazing sailing destination.

Tioman Sea Park Islands are classified among the ten most beautiful islands in the world. Every visitor is charmed by these volcanic islands, covered by dense and varied vegetation.

Time looks as if it has stood still with no cars, only taxi boats. The islands have fine white sand beaches, crystal waters, extremely colourful and varied submarine fauna and flora and very friendly inhabitants.

The warm waters and good visibility make Tioman a paradise for divers. Discover astounding sights such as colourful Gorgonian sea fans, Staghorn corals, and beautifully sculptured sea sponges.

Snorkelers can delight in swimming alongside huge Napoleon Wrasse, Golden Striped Trevally, Bumphead Parrotfish and shoals of Fusiliers.

There are several villages scattered along the coastline, each one offers a different and unique atmosphere. Tioman's verdant greenery is home to a splendid variety of plants and small animals, including butterflies, monitor lizards, deer and monkeys.

The island's granite formations make for excellent rock-climbing expeditions. The more adventurous can attempt to scale the sheer cliff face of the legendary Gunung Nenek Semukut or Dragons Horns.

Weather Conditions

Climate

General weather for Malaysia

Langkawi

Langkawi is an ALL YEAR ROUND sailing destination. There are two main seasons, the wet and dry season, or the SW or NE monsoon, respectively.

Seasons tend to be predictable, although there may be inconsistencies as they change from one to the other. Langkawi experiences a very warm and humid climate where its temperatures rarely alter throughout the year.

However with temperatures that change to only to a minimal degree, travelling to Langkawi is possible all year-round, even during the rainy season which occurs from April to May and again in October to November.

The weather will generally be hot filled with scorching sunshine, yet a sudden downpour for a couple of hours in the evening can most certainly be expected.

Throughout the summers arid gentle breezes blow towards the west that carry out no rainfall. The long dry spell of summers comes to an end with the approach of the rainy season. The rainy season is at its peak between the months of August and September.

From November to April, the climate in Langkawi is sunny and dry with calm seas. From May to October the winds tend to be stronger with the occasional tropical shower, although most of the sailing area remains sheltered.

There is a good mix of secluded anchorages and marinas with provisioning facilities at which to make overnight stops. Winds are generally north-easterly in the summer and south-westerly in the winter months. The tidal range is approximately two to three metres. Yacht charters in Malaysia are more suitable for competent sailors with a fair amount of previous sailing experience.

Tioman Islands

The Tioman Islands best period to visit is between April to October (contrary to Phuket).

With less rain, and clear skies. The winds are from South-East, averaging 15 Knots.

Winds are parallel to the coast, so it is often required to sail close to the wind or on the quarter.

Sometimes in the evening, westerly squalls (20 to 40 knots) can affect some moorings located on the west side of the islands (protected from South-East winds), but in the last few years this is quite rare.

Provisioning
We recommend at least to provision with basic products. It’s easier to do before departure as most of your meals will be taken on board even though crew can go ashore for dinners.

Currency
Local currency is Ringgit (1 euro is roughly 5 Ringgit) - Credit cards are accepted in the shops / there are cash dispensers – Visa Card, Eurocard, American Express and Diners Club are accepted in mall and hotels. One recommends bringing a “mix” of cash and traveller checks.

Passport and Visas
No specific visa required for most of nationalities - A valid (for at least 6 months) passport is compulsory.

Religion
Muslim

Language
Bahasa Malayu – Malais (and English is widely spoken).
Few Malay words: Selamat pagi = good morning // Selamat petang = good evening // Selamat
datang = welcome // Selamat tinggal = good bye // Terima kasih = thank you // Maafkan saya
= excuse me.

Health
No vaccines compulsory for European travellers.

If you are under treatment, it will be hard to find a pharmacy after leaving the airport.
Bring along with you the necessary pills or drugs quantity.
Keep your vital pills or drugs with you in your hand luggage (in case of luggage losses).
Plan a mosquito repellent and a first aid kit.

Even if you can easily stand the sun, it’s much harder on a boat than on the land because of reverberation. Smooth breeze, avoid feeling the heat and you get sun burnt before noticing it.

Take a cap and sun glasses. A good sun cream is necessary at least for the first few days.

Advice
Before entering in temples or Mosques take off shoes and even though taking pictures is allowed but ask before. Take only soft bags - No suite case (rigid suite cases are too cumbersome on a boat).

Diving
Diving can be arranged locally upon request.
