West Coast France

(Looking for Cote D'Azur - Click Here)

With it’s a mild climate, fine beaches, good swimming, quiet anchorages and excellent sailing conditions Brittany and south west France are understandably popular yacht charter destinations.

Sailing from some of the largest deep water ports in southern Brittany you will be ideally situated to explore the Gulf of Morbihan and a few miles from some of the most beautiful islands this coast has to offer.

Quiberon Bay, sheltered by the islands, is a well-protected cruising zone which is very popular with yachtsmen, who can sail throughout the year.

Retaining its original beauty and offering all the pleasures of the sea and gastronomy discover the architectural and natural riches between seaside and countryside.

Visit the many picturesque ports, immense beaches of fine golden sand and stop off at villages of pastel-coloured houses and tiny fishing ports along the way. Chartering further south is possible in the Vendee that lies between the Côte d'Argent and Brittany but with a character all of its own.

The Atlantic Coast stretches 140 km, full of fine white sandy beaches with an amazing 210 days sunshine per year, a record rivalling that of the south of France.

The Vendée coast is renowned for its luminosity and is called locally "LA COTE DE LA LUMIERE"... The Vendée is rich with many museums, castles and heritage centres to visit. It is a land of naturally preserved space with flatlands, riddled with creeks, vast beaches and sand dunes.

At dusk local towns transform into lively, welcoming stopovers with a variety of festivals, folklore pageants and magnificent evening shows. The region is famous for providing a wealth of local seafood. Gently sloping beaches and fragrant pine woods adorn this beautiful coastline.

Even further south and throughout the year, from Royan to La Rochelle, a vast area of water provides a perfect sailing zone for quality cruising. Hidden behind the islands of Ré, Aix, Madame and Oléron, the lake created by the Breton and Antioche narrows ("pertuis") is protected from the ocean's worst tempers. Yachtsmen can enjoy the picturesque little ports of these ever-popular islands.

General weather for the French Riviera

The glamour, class and fame of the Cote D’Azur is accompanied by a glorious typical Mediterranean climate of warm summers and mild winters. The unique position that the French Riviera holds between the Mediterranean Sea and the French Alps creates a micro-climate that makes the area's weather so delightful.

Warm sunny days can be found all year round. The scorching hot summer days are broken up by the evening sea breezes which waft over the resort and provide a cool break from the heat and create an ideal atmosphere to enjoy what this alluring picturesque town has to offer. In the summer temperatures can reach highs of 30 ºC but generally sit in the mid twenties.

The famous "Mistral" wind does occur intermittently throughout the year, especially in the Var region (the western area) that is closer to the Rhone Valley where it originates. This can produce some exciting or hazardous sailing conditions. Water temperatures are in the 70's to low 80's in the summer, perfect for water sports of all kinds.
